Tinnitus and Hyperacusis Treatment

We treat patients from across Australia and overseas.

We undertake a full medical and audiological assessment and provide treatment for tinnitus and hyperacusis.

Our treatment protocol for both tinnitus and hyperacusis is called Williams' Tinnitus Treatment (WiTT).

Dr Williams was trained by Pawel and Margaret Jastreboff in Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT) in 2009. WiTT is a modified version of TRT.

WiTT tinnitus and hyperacusis treatment is a team approach in our multidisciplinary clinic.  Dr Brian Williams is an Ear Nose and Throat Specialist (ENT) and Ms Krystal Lo is an Audiologist.

(A) Initial Assessment

A Medical evaluation by Dr Brian Williams is necessary to determine the cause of the tinnitus. Tinnitus profiling and diagnostic pure tone audiometry will also need to be undertaken. Any associated medical conditions like ear pain, vertigo, hearing loss will be assessed as well as other conditions that can aggravate your tinnitus. Dr Williams will also remove earwax if needed and undertake micro-inspection of the eardrums (tympanic membranes).  Dr Williams will also ask you to complete several Questionnaires regarding your tinnitus/ hyperacusis.

Dr Williams may recommend imaging of the ears and head and/or blood tests. Any further tests will be arranged and results given at the next consultation.

First Step: (B) Follow up assessment

Dr Williams will explain the results of the medical evaluation including results of any testing undertaken. Dr Williams will discuss the cause of you tinnitus/hyperacusis and any associated medical conditions and discuss any medical therapy you may need. Dr Williams will also obtain more information about your tinnitus/hyperacusis. Dr Williams and Ms Lo will discuss treatment options with WiTT, including  hearing aids with sound generators or sound generators alone. Ms Lo will order in the devices for the next step.

Second Step: (C) Start Williams’ Tinnitus Treatment (WiTT)

Dr Williams will explain the neurophysiology of the hearing pathways and our model of tinnitus/ hyperacusis and how treatment using our model with education and training and sound generators with or without hearing aids can help your tinnitus/ hyperacusis. Ms Lo with fit the sound generators with or without hearing aids depending on your hearing levels.
